General Membership Meeting Minutes, January 10, 2019
Call to Order
The membership meeting was held at the Masonic Lunar Lodge #918, 740 Eastview Drive, Madison starting at 7:10pm. Meeting called to order by Commander Larry Vanoy. Prayer was given by chaplain Andy Caudle
Legionnaires in attendance: Larry Vannoy – Commander, Earl Watts – 1st Vice, Tom Whitten – 2nd Vice, Stacey Harring – Adjutant, Robert Kirby – Finance Officer, Chris Brown – Judge Advocate, Andrew Caudle -Chaplin, Richard Blanton Jr- Historian, Tom McKinney-Americanism, Carlos Woods – County Commander, Bill McGahey, Richard Jones, Edward Durst, Ethel Durst, Alan Cerny, David Silvernail, Douglas Pruett, Lisa Hughes, Cherish Croft, Jean Downs, Jerry Barker, Keith Cosby
Approval of the Minutes – Minutes were voted to be accepted by the group after a motion by Bill McGahey and seconded by Jean Downs.
Sick and Shut Ins – Don Rice has taken a turn for the worse, and is near the end. Birdie his wife has been caring for him for months, and she’s here tonight to spend time with all of those who love him. Carlos Woods’ wife continues to have some challenges please keep her in your prayers. Carl Dow is still about the same, and likes to have visitors.
Adjutant – 74% of membership renewed so far – Please renew if you have not already. The year ends in July, but let’s try to get 100% ASAP.
Finance Report – Finance report was passed out and a motion to approve was made by Tom McKinney and seconded by Bill McGahey.
State/County – Post 1983 is the post that everyone in AL goes into if you don’t join a specific post. As part of a State revitalization effort, tomorrow and Saturday we will be calling everyone that in on that list in the county, sorted by zip code and if they agree they will be transferred to the post they fall into.
JROTC: We have made annual donations to each of the three JROTC programs we sponsor at Bob Jones, James Clemens and Sparkman High School. As part of our sponsorship we will be making military and academic excellence awards. There is an article in the Madison Record today about our support to the JROTC.
Oratorical – Jan 26th is the Madison County contest. The cut off date for registration is Jan 22nd. Tom McKinney is in charge and presented a report to the membership on readiness for the event. There are several volunteer positions that we still need help with. We will continue to recruit to fill all positions. On the 26th, timeline is as follows: 0830 for those who are volunteering, and 0900 for the contestants, and it will start at 1000.
Pavers – 4 more have been sold, applications are here if anyone would like one.
Blue Star Banner – If you know of anyone who is eligible and would like one, please let us know.
POST 229 Auxiliary – Jean Downs is the President, and they will be doing a recruiting event next month. They will be meeting in an alternate location (not the Lunar Lodge), TBD.
North Alabama Veterans Fraternal Organization Coalition (NAVFOC) – New board members were inducted at the January meeting. No business was conducted at the meeting.
Boy Scouts Troop 201 – Looking for people to help with merit badges, wood and metal workers. Another possibility is a sit down with Veterans for discussions. March 9th, Hunter Gaufennet would like to use the fire pit in Veteran’s park for his Eagle ceremony, or the Lunar Lodge as a back up for bad weather.
Girl Scout 926 – no report. Thank you for all the help for with the wreaths and bows for the cemeteries.
Old Business: None.
Memorial Day, 2019: Planning has started; Commander Vannoy stated that State Representative Mike Ball is going to be our guest speaker. We will be getting busy for the ceremony.
Flags: Discussion on when we will put out flags for Memorial Day. Decision was made to put them out May 18th and pick up on June 1st
Paver: Ask the family of the 1LT that was killed in the C130 from Madison about adding him to the wall. Motion by Andy Caudle, second by Dick Jones.
